ANET-Houston, Meeting Minutes, November 28, 2012, 5:30
pm, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Room C-030.
5:30 pm
Meeting called to order by President Marg Nunez.
Thanksgiving buffet served. A specially decorated cake was presented to
our guest speaker. The attendance was the largest of all 2011 ANET
meetings.
5:40 pm
Our guest speaker was introduced by Cynthia Beauchamp, RN.
Our guest speaker was Margie Steele, RN. Ms. Steele is a Director of
Nursing, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital. She has been working for St.
Luke’s, full-time, continuously, for 50 years. That’s right, 50 years.
Ms. Steele is the whole-house administrator of St. Luke’s, for the night
shift.
Ms. Steele told us the story of her nursing career. She was a nursing
student from Mississippi, who trained at the VA hospital, in Houston.
She met her husband here in Houston.
When Ms. Steele started working at St. Luke’s, the hospital was
limited to the six story, 1954 building, which housed about 150
patients. That St. Luke’s lacked departments, which are ubiquitous to
most modern hospitals, such as emergency rooms.
Ms. Steele regaled the ANET members with humorous anecdotes from her
long career. Ms. Steele shared one of her keys to success in nursing:
Keep A Low Profile.
Today Ms. Steele acts as the hospital administrator, for the night shift, at
St. Luke’s.
6:20 pm
Cake and Congratulations were offered to Ms. Steele in celebration of her
long and distinguished career.
