In the Houston area, there are more than
1,000 people waiting for an organ transplant. Nationwide, there are over 90,000 waiting. An even greater need exists for patients
awaiting tissue transplants such as corneas, skin, and bone. Studies have shown the 7 out of 10 families would agree to donate
their loved one’s organs and tissues if they were offered the opportunity.
Donor families state that donation helps them to cope with their
loss and makes them feel the death was not in vain. They take great comfort in knowing someone else’s life was saved
or improved through their donation.
The healthcare team plays
an important role in the organ and tissue donation process. They are the vital link between potential donor families and the
procurement organizations that make the precious gift of life and sight possible.
